Recovery Suit FAQ — Equafleece® Cotton Dog T-Shirt Suits

These answers are provided for general guidance only. Every dog and situation is different. Always follow your vet's specific instructions for your dog's recovery or condition.

Recovery Suit vs. Cone — Which Should I Choose?

A recovery suit such as the Equafleece® Cotton T-Shirt Suit is designed to cover the body and protect surgical sites, wounds, or skin conditions on the trunk from licking and interference. It may be a more comfortable alternative to an Elizabethan collar (cone) for some dogs, as it allows greater freedom of movement, normal sleep positions, and peripheral vision.

However, a suit cannot protect the head, face, tail base, or lower limbs. If your dog's wound or surgical site is in one of those areas, a cone or other protective solution may still be needed. Some dogs may require both. Ask your vet which option — or combination — is appropriate for your dog's specific situation.

How Do I Measure My Dog for the Right Size?

A well-fitted suit should be snug but not restrictive, with no gaping that would allow access to the wound. To measure your dog:

  • Length: Measure from the base of the neck (where a collar sits) to the base of the tail.
  • Chest/girth: Measure around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs.
  • Weight: Use your dog's current weight as a starting guide, then cross-reference with the size chart.

Equafleece® suits are sized in inches by body length. Always refer to the size guide on the product page and, when in doubt, size up slightly — a suit that is a little long is easier to manage than one that is too tight. If your dog is between sizes or has an unusual body shape (deep-chested, long-backed, etc.), contact us before ordering.

Can My Dog Go to the Toilet Whilst Wearing the Suit?

Yes. The Equafleece® Cotton T-Shirt Suit has an open rear section designed to allow dogs to urinate and defecate normally without removing the suit. For male dogs, the suit is open underneath, allowing toileting without modification.

After toileting, check that the suit hasn't shifted and that the wound area remains covered. Rinse or spot-clean any soiling promptly to keep the suit hygienic.

Will My Dog Be Able to Move Normally?

Equafleece® suits are made from a stretchy cotton blend designed to move with the dog. Most dogs adapt quickly and are able to walk, sit, lie down, and get up without difficulty. The fabric is breathable and lightweight, which helps dogs stay comfortable during recovery.

Some dogs may take a short time to adjust to wearing a suit for the first time. Supervise your dog when they first wear it and watch for any signs of distress, restricted movement, or overheating. If your dog seems unusually uncomfortable, check the fit and consult your vet if needed.

How Do I Wash the Suit?

The Equafleece® Cotton T-Shirt Suit is machine washable. Wash at 30°C on a gentle or delicate cycle. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners, as these can affect the fabric's stretch and may irritate recovering skin. Tumble dry on low, or air dry flat to preserve the shape. Having a spare suit can be helpful so that one is always clean and ready while the other is being washed.

How Long Should My Dog Wear the Suit?

Wear duration will depend entirely on your vet's advice for your dog's procedure or condition. As a general guide, many post-surgical dogs wear a recovery suit throughout the healing period — typically around 10–14 days following a routine operation — but this varies widely. Follow your vet's instructions on when the suit can be removed and for how long each day, if applicable.

Check the covered area daily (when it is safe to do so) for any signs of redness, swelling, discharge, or irritation, and contact your vet promptly if you notice any concerns.

Is a Recovery Suit Suitable for Skin Conditions?

Some owners find recovery suits useful for dogs with skin conditions such as allergies or dermatitis, to help prevent scratching and to keep topical treatments in place. The cotton fabric is gentle against sensitive skin. However, a recovery suit is not a medical treatment, and skin conditions should always be assessed and managed under veterinary supervision. The suit may complement your vet's plan, but it does not replace it.

When Should I Always Follow Veterinary Advice?

  • If your dog has had surgery — follow post-operative care instructions precisely.
  • If the wound shows signs of infection: increased redness, swelling, heat, discharge, or odour.
  • If your dog is in pain, distressed, or not recovering as expected.
  • If you are unsure whether a suit is appropriate for your dog's condition.
  • If your dog manages to remove or work around the suit and accesses the wound.

When in doubt, call your vet. These suits are supportive aids — they work best as part of a full recovery plan guided by your veterinary team.
